ARCA recently completed an architecturally designed self-contained studio apartment in the trendy inner city location of Lygon Street in Carlton North. Our clients were keen to create a functional building with rustic, urban character to harmonise with the local environment.

On the outside, recycled bricks were carefully selected and stunningly juxtaposed against black doors and monument grey panels on the upper floor to create a gritty and industrial feel. Elegant French windows provide an abundance of natural light to the ground floor whilst connecting the kitchen with a charming courtyard between the studio and the main dwelling.

Inside, the floor plan was cleverly designed to optimise every inch of space and provide a highly functional self-contained studio apartment. A neutral colour palette was employed with lavish hornbeam timber flooring and timber benchtops to create a light and airy space.

Downstairs, a well-appointed kitchen connects to an open plan living area that leads directly onto a central courtyard and cobbled rear laneway. The staircase connecting the upper and lower levels was clad with hornbeam timber treads and sophisticated feature tiles on the risers. The staircase was flanked with a glass balustrade and timber handrail, which synchronises with the other design elements of the dwelling.

On the upper level, a large bedroom boasting a cathedral ceiling, built-in wardrobe, storage cupboards and timber shelving provides a functional and minimalist space with a carefully positioned privacy window harnessing the sun’s natural light and warmth. The charming ensuite bathroom was carefully designed to optimise space, function and natural light with electric underfloor heating providing radiant heat and comfort during colder months.
